Rhythm of Life series: Heartbeat
The rhythm of a beating heart changes according to what activity we are doing. Our heart is a muscle that we need to keep strong through movement and moderate exercise. Kids running, jumping, playing, riding bikes – whatever they are interested in that keeps their bodies moving and heart pumping.
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in front of cancer. Heart-healthy food intake helps at the basic level to keep rhythms of life sustainable. Starting early with teaching young children a heart-healthy way of eating by choosing foods that keep our systems in an alkaline state will help decrease the number of heart disease and cancer cases down the road.
Fun in the kitchen, fine motor utensil use, and giving kids independence with choosing healthy foods at the grocery store are all great opportunities for them to learn how to keep the rhythm of their hearts beating strong for many years to come. Other foods to introduce them to include walnuts and soy for their heart-healthy benefits.
